A federal high court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos State, has declared that all marriage certificates issued by the Ikoyi Marriage Registry and all other federal marriage registries are invalid.

The declaration is contained in Justice D.E Osiagor’s judgement in a case between the Eti-Osa local government area of Lagos State and both the Ministry of Interior and Attorney-General of the Federation, according to Arise TV.

The court ordered the closure of all federal marriage registries, including the Ikoyi marriage registry, with immediate effect, after the local government proved the federal government was performing functions that are not within its jurisdiction.

The court also ruled that the federal government, through the ministry of interior, has no right to operate marriage registries.

Osiagbor held that the conduct of marriages and issuance of certificates is statutorily the job of the local governments as provided by the constitution.
