A Nigeria Police traffic officer has been captured in a video being harassed by some personnel of the Nigerian Army.

In the 22-second video filmed from a storeyed building in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Saturday, four soldiers round up the traffic officer and one of them hits him. The traffic officer falls on the motorway and another soldier hits him with a rod.

One of the victim’s colleagues tries to intervene, but his efforts fail amidst violent soldiers.

When FIJ contacted Nwachukwu Onyema, the spokesman of the Nigerian Army, he directed this reporter to Ikedichi Iweha, Deputy Director, 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Oyo State. But Iweha neither answered his calls nor responded to a text message sent to him.

Adewale Osifeso, the spokesman of the state police command, did not answer several calls to his line between Saturday and Sunday. He has also not responded to a text message sent to him.

In November, FIJ exclusively reported that the Nigeria Police Force was secretly gathering momentum to counter the army on allegations of police brutality against its personnel.

In response to a letter titled ‘Evaluating Incidences of Police Brutality Against Personnel of Nigerian Army’, signed by Major General J. A. Ataguba, Usman Baba Alkali, the Inspector-General of Police, denied the allegation. Alkali advised the army to consult the Nigeria Police for statistics on the altercations that had existed between the two security arms.

FIJ also gathered that Alkali directed all heads of departments, assistant commissioners, and other senior officers in the police to compile incidents of brutalization of police officers by soldiers, “be it harassment, destruction of police properties, or physical confrontation from 2017 to date”.
