On Monday, workers at the National Assembly, under the aegis of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), embarked on an industrial action, protesting and preventing visitors and staff from entering.

This follows a joint meeting that was held by the National Assembly and the National Assembly Service Commission chapters of PASAN last Thursday.

During the meeting, the workers discussed the non-payment of accumulated salaries and other allowances despite the signing of an MoU by the National Assembly management in April 2021.

“Just as agreed and planned last week, the industrial action has begun. We will continue to barricade the premises and disrupt activities until we are heard and our demands are met,” a PASAN member, who asked not to be named, told FIJ.

In videos obtained by FIJ, the striking workers were seen with placards, singing solidarity songs while walking in protest within the premises.

“The management of the national assembly has refused to implement the agreements earlier signed with them in a memorandum of understanding since April, last year. We are not fools. We must be heard. Our demands must also be met. Enough is enough. We can’t keep working tirelessly and some people who don’t work as much as we do will be the ones enjoying endless benefits,” another protester, who asked not to be named, told FIJ.

FIJ gathered that the staff plan to continue the strike until the terms agreed to in the April 2021 MOU are implemented.

The aggrieved staff are seeking the payment of rent subsidies, six months arrears of hazard allowance, and 15 months’ arrears, among others.

The ongoing action may prevent lawmakers from having their first 2022 session on January 18.
