Ernest Shonekan, former head of the Nigerian national government, is dead.

The 85-year-old died in Lagos, Guardian reports.

Shonekan succeeded General Ibrahim Babangida on August 24, 1993, and served as chairman of the National Interim Government of Nigeria until he was removed from office in a bloodless coup led by the late General Sani Abacha on 17 November 1993.
