The first jab of Covid-19 vaccination came to an end in Lagos State on Friday. This led to an increase in the number of people flooding health centres to receive their vaccination. The Lagos State Ministry of Health reported that 15,000 people were vaccinated on Friday, bringing those vaccinated in Lagos to a total of 232,720.

However, on Monday morning, FIJ learned that primary health care centres were doing a two-day mop-up, which will end on Tuesday. One of the health workers told FIJ she suspected the government would have to extend the period of the mop-up exercise, as more people were showing up for the Covid-19 vaccination.

The health worker said the first two weeks of the vaccination was a tough period full of commotion but now it was well-contained.

FIJ observed a low turnout in the two health centres it visited. This was contrary to the experience of Nigerian author Iquo Abasi, who said she spent close to two hours on Friday trying to get vaccinated. The crowd was a result of Friday being the last day of being vaccinated.

Speaking with the health workers on what was next after the first dose of vaccination, they said they would have to await instructions from the secretariat.

On March 2, Nigeria’s first Covid-19 vaccines, Oxford/AstraZeneca shots landed the country’s capital, Abuja. The 3.92 million doses were received from the international COVAX scheme. Lagos State flagged off its vaccination on March 12, making use of primary health centres as vaccinations points across the state.
