Derrick Uche, a 28-year-old graduate of the Federal Polytechnic Auchi, Auchi, Edo State, is on a search for his father whom he can only identify as ‘Uche’.

Derrick told FIJ on Friday that he had never seen his father and does not have any memories of him in his 28 years of existence.

“I am searching for my father,” he said. “I only know his name to be Uche. I don’t know what he looks like, neither do I have any memory of him.

“The only thing I hold on to is a picture of him when he was younger. I got the picture from my mother, Tina Uwaifo. I don’t know any of his relatives either. He is from Aboh mbaise, Aboh, Imo State.”

Uche also told FIJ that his mother never spoke about his father and he did not ask because he did not want to make her uncomfortable.

“My mother died in 2017,” he said. “We never spoke about my father and I did not ask because I did not want to make her uncomfortable. One just needs to know these things at some point in life.”

He said the only time he spoke extensively about his father was in 2019, in a conversation with his maternal grandmother, simply identified as Grace.

“I once asked my grandmother about my father. She told me that my mother came to Benin with ‘a boy’ whose name was Uche in late 1993.

“She said my mother told her the ‘boy’ was responsible for her pregnancy and he had admitted it. She said he travelled back to Lagos and that was the only conversation she had about him.”
