Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) trailing suspected internet fraudsters allegedly broke into a student hostel in Owo, Ondo State, on Tuesday night, forcefully removing burglaries and causing damage to the building.

Commenting under a tweet about the incident on Wednesday, Olawunmi Moyin, a resident of Owo, said the officers raided from 12:30 to 2:00 in the midnight, using an axe to force doors open.

“They raided from 12:30 till 2:00 in the midnight. Funny thing, is rain was falling. This act is so bad, and gutter-like. Who uses axe to force open burglary doors? Jeez!!” She said.

Oluyemi Fasipe, a youth leader in the state who had posted a video of the damaged hostel on Twitter, told Vanguard on Wednesday that while the EFCC reserved the right to arrest and duly prosecute internet fraudsters, the act of raiding young people’s residences for extortion was grossly unbecoming at a time the nation was trying to recover from the economic setback it suffered as a result of last year’s #EndSars protest meant to quell similar moves by the now defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.

Many who reacted to Fasipe’s tweet likened the uncivil act of the EFCC officers to robbery.
