01.05.2021 news DSVRT Forwards Baba Ijesha’s Case File to Directorate of Public Prosecution

The Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), Lagos,, has informed the public through a press release that  it is actively following up the ‘Baba Ijesha’ sexual molestation case. The team confirmed that a duplicate case file had been forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Olanrewaju James Omiyinka, popularly known as ‘Baba Ijesha’ for his role in Yoruba and English movies, was arrested on April 22 on charges of raping a minor. A CCTV footage reported by a Nigerian local media house showed Baba Ijesha sexually assaulting a 14-year-old-girl who was in the care of Adekola Adekanya, a popular comedienne known as ‘Princess’.

DSVRT said it was considering four allegations: Sexual assault by penetration under section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and punishable by life imprisonment; attempted sexual assault by penetration under Section 262 of the Criminal Law, punishable by 14 years imprisonment; sexual assault under Section 263 of the criminal law and punishable by three years imprisonment, and finally indecent treatment of a child under Section 135, which is punishable by seven years imprisonment.

The Baba Ijesha case has been subject to social media conversations and outcry, with prominent individuals making sure to follow up the case. The DSVRT expressed confidence in the Lagos State justice system.
