Toba Adedeji, a correspondent with The Nation newspaper, was on Tuesday shot by the police during a protest involving some youths in Osogbo, Osun State, on Tuesday.

According to the report made available to FIJ, the journalist was shot in the thigh by policemen deployed to disperse the protesters, who had gathered to protest the alleged extrajudicial killing of Abiola Afolabi, one of their comrades.

The protests began after the youths retrieved Afolabi’s corpse from the mortuary ahead of his burial scheduled to hold in Ilesa, his hometown.

The youths were said to have obstructed all kinds of vehicular movement during the protest.

Policemen were said to have arrived the scene moments later, shooting sporadically to disperse the protesters.

Apart from Adedeji, two other unnamed persons, a male and a female, were also injured by the police during the shooting.

Just like Adedeji, the female protester was also said to have been hit in the thigh by the police bullet.

The correspondent was later taken to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
