15.06.2022 Featured After Pleading Guilty, Court Hands Two-Year Jail Sentence to Kyari’s Co-Defendants

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has handed a two-year jail sentence to two men in a suit filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The court, on Tuesday, sentenced Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, 6th and 7th defendants in the suit which has Abba Kyari, suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, as 1st defendant.

While delivering judgement, Justice Emeka Nwite said they were guilty on counts 5, 6 and 7, and that each count attracted a two-year jail term sentence, but both defendants would serve them concurrently, according to Premium Times.

He said the sentence would be considered to have been served from the day they were arrested by the NDLEA.

UNEIBE and Ezenwanne were arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu by the police, and handed over to the NDLEA.

Both parties entered into a plea bargain with the prosecution through E. U. Okenyi, their lawyer, and pled guilty to the charges.

Recall that the NDLEA arraigned Kyari and six others on March 7, 2022, on charges bordering on conspiracy, illegal dealing in cocaine, importation of cocaine and obstruction.

Of the six others arrested alongside Kyari, only Umeibe and Ezenwanne were not police officers.

They were both accused of importing 21.3kg of cocaine into Nigeria via the airport in Enugu on January 19, 2022.
