A relative of Kayode Ajayi, a 29-year-old officer of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) slain in Mosafejo, Oshodi area of Lagos, has revealed the circumstances that led to his death.

In a Twitter thread on Thursday, the lady, a niece to the late airman, said he was driven to an unknown location after a confrontation with a driver and conductor during a trip.

“He came from barracks in Oshodi to visit us in Ikorodu,” she said.

“He left around 8pm. The driver and bus conductor drove him off because they had a confrontation during the trip and then went ahead to kill him.

“Still can’t get over the fact that I accompanied him that night. His wife is almost due for delivery. He was 29, just getting his life started and they just killed him like that because he tried to defend a civilian they tried to harass in the bus.

“When they dropped everyone at the last bus top, they blocked him from coming down and then drove off while the confrontation was going on. Only for the woman to pick up crying that they just drove him off and explained everything. She said she went to the nearest police station and they said no fuel in the patrol van so there was nothing they could do.”

Ajayi’s death led to a wave of unrest in Mosafejo on Thursday, as military officers invaded the area in what looked like a revenge attack. In a video circulated on social media, residents and commuters were seen scampering to safety as violence erupted.

According to the lady, whose real name was not revealed, the incident that led to the NAF officer’s death happened on Sunday, but his family was not aware of his death until someone who had found his dead body called in on Tuesday.
