20.07.2022 Featured Nigerian Remanded in Indian Prison Dies After Artery Stroke

A Nigerian simply identified as Izuchukwu has died after suffering a stroke in an Indian prison on Monday.

According to Hindustan Times, the 38-year-old Nigerian died of acute artery stroke after he was held in a jail in Kullu, Mandi District, Himachal, northern India, for a drug trafficking-related offence.

Gurdev Sharma, a police chief in the district, said the Nigerian died while he was being taken to the hospital.

“The Nigerian national was lodged in the sub-jail after he had been remanded by a Kullu court to 14-day judicial custody till July 29,” he was quoted to have said.

“A case was registered against him under section 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Bhuntar police station on July 14.

“Izuchukwu fell unconscious on Monday morning and was admitted to Kullu regional hospital.”

Sharma said that the medical officer at the regional hospital recommended that Izuchukwu be taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College when he noticed the situation was critical.

“On the way, his condition deteriorated and the government medical college and hospital in Mandi district declared him brought dead,” he said.

“His body has been kept in the mortuary in Kullu and all the necessary protocols are being followed.”

The police chief also said that the Nigerian Embassy had been informed of the incident.
