Officers attached to Dugbe Police Station in Osogbo, Osun State, have refunded N150,000 to Oluwadamilola Babatunde, the Lagos-based phone vendor from whom they extorted N960,000 between May and June.

Babatunde told FIJ that Yemisi Opalola, the Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, invited him to the state on Monday, where he met Akinloye Oyegade, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the station.

He said Oyegade invited Sola Afolabi, the officer who extorted the sum from him and one Francis Akuenu, his friend. He said Afolabi committed to paying a fraction of his salary monthly until he fully repaid the extortion.

Speaking with FIJ, he said, “Thanks a lot. They gave us N150,000 and promised to repay N50,000 monthly for nine months to balance N450,000.”

FIJ earlier reported how both men were falsely accused of burglary and phone theft in Osun and taken from Lagos to the Dugbe station where they were made to part with N660,000.

The customer who had bought the said stolen phone from them was also arrested and made to pay N100,000 and forfeit the phone. Meanwhile, Babatunde had paid N200,000 for the same phone.

Babatunde told FIJ that he forfeited some of the money and agreed on a N600,000 refund as the police insisted he demand the N200,000 paid for the phone from Ifesanwo Bukola, the lady they said was the actual culprit.

Earlier, he told FIJ that the police had tried to only pay N150,000 and bury the matter, but after FIJ’s report, they agreed to pay the rest in instalments.
