Oreofe Oladimeji (not real name), a Lagos-based computer engineer, has accused Wallets Africa, a cross-border payment platform, of defrauding him of N60,000.

Oladimeji told FIJ that he had funded his Wallets Africa account with N60,000 on July 27 and the amount had reflected in his available balance on the platform.

The engineer said that after he made the deposit, he converted the sum to dollars and it was about $99.

Proof of Topup

“After loading the $99 on my virtual dollar card on the app, I noticed that the money had disappeared. I immediately contacted Wallets Africa about the issue but got no response,” he told FIJ.

He said the company refused to refund the money to him despite several appeals.

“They have continued to make empty promises,” he said. “I have also continued to reach out to them, but these days, they hardly reply. Whenever they reply, they say they are working on it and it will be refunded shortly. However, they have done nothing for close to three weeks now. All they gave me were silly excuses.”

Message with Wallet Africa

Faith Timilehin Ajala, another customer of Wallets Africa, told FIJ about the company’s refusal to pay him a $7 refund since July 14.

Ajala said he discovered his $7 was missing from his account with the company after he tried to purchase a service from their application on behalf of his friend.

“Firstly, I tried to use the card to purchase a service on Fiverr, however the dollar card didn’t work. So I decided to withdraw the money, but it didn’t reflect on my dashboard in naira. Nothing was in the account,” Ajala said.

“It wasn’t pleasant at all. I had to look for other alternatives that day to sort myself out.

“I’ve sent them numerous messages since then, but they have been ‘posting’ me that they are working on it. I haven’t got my money back since then.”

FIJ made several phone calls to Wallets Africa for comments, but there was no response from them. A message sent to them had also not been responded to at press time.

Wallets Africa allows people to send, receive money and make payments with phone numbers across Africa.

A little search for reviews online also showed that many other users have had issues with their funds and the platform in recent times.
