For one week, a displaced woman and her underage daughter have been sleeping and eating on the road near the State Housing Estate in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, FIJ can report.

According to a Good Samaritan who prefers anonymity, the woman appeared mentally ill but the young child was said to be hale and hearty.

“The road is a very busy one in Calabar and it is very dangerous for anyone to be lying there night and day,” he said. “The woman and her daughter can be hit by oncoming vehicles and she even cooks there too.”

The displaced woman and her daughter

FIJ learnt that the road, which leads to Channel View Hotel, has no street lights to illuminate the vicinity, making the displaced woman and her child at risk of any attack or accident from oncoming vehicles whenever it is dark.

A message sent to the official Facebook account of the Cross River State Ministry of Humanity and Social Welfare under the commissioner, Blessing Egbara, for comments has not been responded to as of press time.

According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, Nigeria has up to 2.7 million displaced persons.
