The Nigerian Police Complaints Response Unit and the Abia State Criminal Investigation Department have refunded the sum of N140,000 unduly collected from Emmanuel Chigozie Nwanji, a UK-based Nigerian man.
This came three days after FIJ reported that an officer of the Abia State CID defrauded Nwanji of N120,000 and another officer of the Police Complaints Unit collected a bribe of N20,000 when a complaint was made to the unit.

Nwanji had paid N120,000 for two police character certificates to Akpelu Obioma, an officer at the Abia State CID, since September 2. However, not only did the officer fail to deliver the certificates, he also blocked Nwanji and sent him threats via SMS when he asked for a refund.
Nwanji complained to the Police Complaint Unit about the actions of the erring officer, but a representative asked him for N20,000 to “fast-track the complaints and raise a complaint ticket”.

While expressing his gratitude to FIJ on Tuesday, Nwanji said the money collected from him by the officers had been refunded.
”I got a call this morning from another officer at the Police Complaints Response Units who assured me that the money collected by both officers would be refunded to me,” Nwanji said.
”The officer further said no stone would be left unturned as there would be an internal disciplinary measure taken against the erring officers.
“A little while after speaking to the officer, my money was refunded just like that. I just want to thank you so much FIJ for making my voice heard.”
