The rape case involving Don Chima-George and Rasaq Oluwasegun Oke has been fixed for hearing on Thursday, August 1.

The duo will appear before Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Sexual Offences Court, Lagos High Court, Ikeja.

FIJ had reported the last sitting of the case on March 23, which resulted in Justice Soladoye shutting the case of the prosecution and increasing the possibility of Don-Chima and Rasaq to walk free.

Rasaq and Don-Chima face the possibility of life imprisonment under Lagos State laws if found guilty by the court.

Chima-George and Rasaq were to appear before the court on May 18 before the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) embarked on a 64 days industrial strike. The two had been accused of raping a 23-years-old lady in 2019 at De Lankaster Hotel, owned by Don-Chima’s father.

The case, which is being prosecuted by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), was however being unduly influenced in favour of the accused rapists. FIJ had reported the failure of the DPP to present key witnesses to the case that would help in securing a conviction.

The case had garnered publicity in 2019 both on social media and offline, sparking #JusticeForRape. According to the International Centre for Investive Reporting (ICIR), as low as 65 rape convictions have been secured between 1973 and 2019.
