An imposter posing as Kuda Bank customer care on X is using phishing attacks to get sensitive information of Kuda customers under the guise of dispute resolution.
FIJ found that @Helpteam_live usually responds to X users who tag @kudahelp_ng, the official customer care handle of Kuda Bank, on issues revolving around failed transfers or other problems they may have with their Kuda Bank account.
This account was created in September 2023 with 18 followers and follows 372 accounts on X. It promises customers prompt resolution and tells them to send a direct message on X.
On March 22, the handler responded to a Kuda customer with these words:
“Hello valued customer we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused you, kindly send a direct message for prompt resolution”
FIJ followed the prompt and sent him a message on X. FIJ wrote: “Hello sir/ma. I need help with my Kuda account.” The handler responded 42 minutes later, asking FIJ to share its registered email and account number via a link it provided.
FIJ followed the link, which led to a form that bore Kuda Bank’s logo and requested the customer’s email address and password.
FIJ also compared the imposter’s response with the response of the official Kuda customer care handle on X and discovered that Kuda never asks customers to send a direct message on X or a link to provide their email address and password.
It was discovered that Kuda Bank does not have an active phone number that customers can contact for dispute resolution. The phone number on Kuda Bank’s website is 13 digits and never goes through when called.
FIJ learned that users often communicate with them via the Kuda Bank application on X or via email.
Some X users have also called Kuda Bank out on X for delayed or no response.
FIJ learned that some other accounts appear under posts on X where Kuda Bank is mentioned and respond with links similar to the ones sent by @Helpteam_live.
When FIJ contacted Kuda Bank via email, they thanked FIJ for bringing this to their attention and added that any message from any other handle different from their verified page should be ignored.
Kuda Bank also said the page had been reported for a takedown.
