Olailo Adewale, the father of an Ekiti State schoolgirl hit by a speeding car, has accused some senior officers at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, of conspiring with the driver to discharge his daughter prematurely.

Adewale told FIJ that two doctors told him on January 31 that he should take his daughter home and the hospital had denied her treatment since then.

“On Tuesday afternoon, doctors Ariyibi and Oyeleye came to our ward and specifically told me it was time for us go home. This came to us as a surprise because the condition of my daughter is still appalling,” Adewale explained to FIJ.

“She cries anytime she wants to pass urine and needs to move her leg. She is still in pain and I can only imagine how her pain would be compounded if we should go home with the stainless steel fixed into her leg.

“Thinking the discharge directive was hinged on bill payment, I pleaded with the medical practitioners to allow us stay in the hospital till the condition of the patient improved, but my request fell on deaf ears.

“Doctor Oyeleye is from Gogo town and the driver is from Ikun town. When the incident happened, the traditional ruler of Ikun was informed and he linked the driver with Doctor Oyeleye. Since then, both of them have been talking over the phone.

“I observe doctor Oyeleye has been pandering to the driver’s plea to discharge so that he would completely stop his financial commitment to the girl’s treatment. He has been inconsistent ever since.

“One man in the hospital reliably told me that the driver came to their office pleading that the hospital discharge us. His excuse was that he did not have money to be sending to us.”

Responding to FIJ’s phone call on Thursday, Olatunji Alabi, the driver, denied the allegation and started hurling curses on whoever was making the claim.

“That is impossible for me to do. I have been sending them money. Even yesterday, I sent her father N5000. How would I be conniving with someone in the hospital and still be sending them money? I have spent more than N200,000 since the accident occurred.”

A medical expert who asked not to be named told FIJ that discharging the girl with the deep bone wounds and other major complications she still battled would have consequences.

“Letting her go now could worsen her condition. It would send her to square one. Those deep bone wounds on her leg must be healed properly and the bone implant in her leg removed. Her treatment will be in stages. When they are done with the leg treatment, physiotherapists must also do their part,” he said.

Doctor Aribiyi declined to respond to FIJ’s request, claiming public service rules would not permit him to speak directly with the media. He, however, agreed that he was in a good position to respond to the questions.

“By virtue of civil service rules and procedure, I am unable to respond to your questions. But I agree that I should be the one to speak on the matter, being the one treating the girl,” he said.

“The appropriate channel to direct your questions to is the press unit of the hospital.”

A text message sent to the public relations officer of the hospital via the phone number provided on its website had not been responded to at press time.
