Eight years after claiming power should not be begged for, Blessing Agbomhere, an All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain, is begging for the party’s governorship ticket.

On December 30, 2023, Agbomhere declared his intention to contest the 2024 governorship election in the state. He is the current south-south zonal organising secretary of the APC.

As a governorship aspirant in 2016, he said he would not beg anyone for the party’s ticket, as he said he was optimistic of winning at the primaries of the APC without bowing to anyone.

His words, as quoted in the Nation Newspaper, read: “This is the time for young people to be tested. A government without the youths is not for us. We will grab the opportunity this time, and there is nothing anybody can do about it.

“Those who are not for us, we will lock them in a room until the primaries are concluded. Power is not begged for. I will not kneel down to beg an individual or leader to be governor.”

However, he recently wrote a letter to Umar Ganduje, the APC national chairman, and other party stakeholders, seeking the governorship ticket on the grounds that President Bola Tinubu has a culture of rewarding loyalty and dedication to the party.

According to media reports between January 5 and 6, the governorship aspirant asked the party’s leadership to reward his loyalty with the ticket.

The letter, titled ‘Application to be Endorsed as the 2024 Edo State All Progressives Congress’ Governorship Candidate’, partly reads:

“As the South-South Organising Secretary, I worked hard to ensure we won. Thank God, Bola Ahmed Tinubu rewards commitment and loyalty to the Party. By demonstrating loyalty to the Party and commitment to Bola Tinubu’s victory, I, Blessing Agbomhere from Edo North, and the Highest Ranking Party Officer in the race, deserve and merit the Governorship Ticket of the Party.

“I want to work for the people of Edo and Nigeria. The Party has to give me the opportunity to work for my State. Everybody likes APC today because we won. As I have supported the Party and the leaders to succeed; this is the time for the Party and its leaders to give me the Governorship Ticket and support me to win.

“I swear, as Executive Governor, Edo State will witness the rekindling of the massive growth and development sparked by the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s administration in a new dimension. My Chairman, I apply to be given the APC Governorship Ticket. Please, for the sake of the unborn generation of our dear State, engage and employ me to work for our dear State. Thank you in anticipation of your kind consideration.”
