For three years, Onumah Chizobah Lilian, a dietitian in Anambra State, saved N10,000 every month with Niger Insurance, but when she ought to get paid in 2018, the organisation held on to her savings of N369,952.

Lilian told FIJ that in addition to her savings, she was supposed to receive a N30,000 interest (calculated at N10,000 for each year), but both the savings and interest had been ‘hanging’ for four years.

She called them many times and even went to their office at New Market Road, Onitsha in Anambra, several times, but all she got from the organisation were excuses.

“When I started saving, the agreement was that after the three years, they would pay my premium with interest. But since October 2018, I have not received anything but stories from them.

“When it was time to get paid, they prepared a voucher and asked for my documents. I presented everything to them. But since then, whenever I call them, they will say I shouldn’t worry, that they will pay,” she said.

“But they have not paid me! I really needed the money to pay school fees then. I also lost someone at the time and needed money for burial, but I could not get it.”

FIJ obtained the phone number of the contact person for Niger Insurance’s Anambra office, but a call put through to the person revealed that he no longer works with the organisation.

Efforts to get a reaction from the company’s head office in Lagos proved abortive as the three numbers on its official website were not reachable. An email was equally sent to the company, but no response was received as of the time of this report.
