The Republic of Benin is planning to deport Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to Nigeria, for illegal entry into the country.

However, Igboho’s lawyers in Benin are kicking against the move, knowing that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force would arrest their client upon deportation.

According to The Punch, Benin Republic is not ready to engage Nigeria in a diplomatic crisis.

Meanwhile, charges against Igboho are punishable by deportation, fines, or imprisonment.

“Our intelligence gathering showed that it is unhealthy to jail Igboho here (Benin Republic),” a top Interpol officer in Benin said.

“Yes, he was detained for fresh charges. While he was initially in the Brigade Criminelle facility, he made useful confessions. His lawyers also know that he is guilty of irregular migration.”

However, counsels for Igboho have warned Benin Republic against planned deportation of their client. They noted that deportation of the Yoruba Nation agitator is dangerous and against international law.

This development came after Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Benin Republic, believed to have played a major role in arrest of Igboho and his wife, visited the country’s president.
