Some Masters students who graduated from the University of Lagos several years ago have lamented their inability to obtain their certificates and transcripts since leaving the school.

Based on the information gathered by FIJ, the affected students had finished from the institution’s Department of Geoscience since 2013.

Speaking to FIJ on Friday, Bolatito Abegunde (not real name), one of the affected graduates, said she was part of the department’s 2012/2013 set that had been seeking their certificates and transcripts since they graduated.

She said she had been prevented from pursuing a doctorate programme abroad on many occasions due to the unavailability of her transcript.

“We were in the 2012/2013 set. I went to collect my transcript to apply for an international PhD scholarship, but the school of Post Graduate Studies (SPGS) directed me to my department,” Abegunde said.

“At the department, I learnt that some people had gotten their results, while some others had not gotten theirs. For us who had not gotten our results, they said they had not uploaded the results. Now, both the department and the SPGS have continued to keep us in the dark on when our transcripts would be out.

“We called Mrs Oluwakemi Adeogun, the coordinator of MSc in the department, but she told us that the PGS was supposed to have uploaded it as they had moved from manual to electronic documentation of results.

“Some of us had sent mails to the PGS since last year, but everybody has gotten tired because there has been no favourable response.”

Another affected student, who asked not be named, said he mailed the SPGS between 2020 and 2021, and was told to confirm the status of his certificate from the Academic Affairs Unit.

On January 20, 2021, the SPGS would write to him, saying: “Your certificate is yet to be produced and handed over for distribution.”

When FIJ contacted Adeogun on Friday, she refused to comment on the matter.

When Alabi Soneye, Dean of SPGS, was contacted on the same matter, and on the same day, he gave an assurance that the issue would be resolved.

On Monday, FIJ was able to confirm that Soneye indeed sent a mail to Mary Odukoya; Head of Geosciences Department, Adeogun; and the Sub-Dean of the SPGS to look into the matter.

“The candidates are among a few that their departments have not submitted their results properly online for the certificate office to produce their certificates even after we set up a special committee to facilitate that,” Soneye’s mail reads in part.

“I thought Geoscience had resolved the cases and that the certificate office had treated them accordingly.”
