Some officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) deployed to provide security during the Ekiti and Osun gubernatorial elections have complained about the government’s refusal to pay them their allowances for the services they rendered during both exercises.

Some of the officers, who asked not to be named while speaking with FIJ, said they were drafted for the Ekiti election in June, and the Osun election in July.

They also said they were asked to return to their bases and wait for their allowances to be paid after the elections were concluded.

“We were made to travel to the states and were also deployed to villages without any welfare or financial support,” one of the operatives told FIJ.

“We are also yet to receive any official information on the reason for the delay in payment. Using the police scale of payment, each operative should be paid according to their rank.

“Our friends in the police force told us that the least an officer got from the elections was N40,000, but we got nothing. This has never happened in the history of the NSCDC’s participation in election duties.”

Another operative told FIJ that he was told the delay in payment is from the “government”.

“Nobody got anything. We went there, worked and spent money but they [NSCDC Command] did not give us our allowances. We have been asking but they keep telling us to hold on, that the problem is from the government,” the operative said.

When FIJ contacted Sola Odumosun, NSCDC spokesperson, for comments on the issue, he said was not responsible for the delay in payments. He then went on to blame the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for the non-payment.

“We are surprised too; please help confirm the reasons from the Accountant-General’s office, thanks,” Odumosun said.

When FIJ placed a phone call to Henshaw Ogubike, Director, Information, Press and Public Relations, Office of Accountant-General of the Federation, he said he was not aware of the development.

“I am not aware,” Ogubike said. “I am not in the office.”
