Timothy Seun Durodola, an Abuja-based contractor, has detailed how Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) continued to keep him in the dark on the status of a N3 million mobile banking transaction he made.

Durodola told FIJ that the amount in question was a loan he secured so he could assist his brother pay his tuition at a Canadian university.

“My younger brother recently gained admission into a Canadian university and because the deadline for tuition payment was near and I had no money to assist him, I decided to get a N3 million loan from someone,” he said.

“On January 31, I transferred the loan from my GTB account to my brother’s Zenith Bank account so he could make the payment. The money left my account and I could also generate a receipt that showed that the transaction was successful.

“After my account was debited, the money did not get to my brother’s Zenith Bank account. Till we speak, the money has still not been received by my brother. The worrying part is that GTB has also refused to reverse the N3 million to my account.

“When I called GTB on February 1, the official I spoke with said my complaint had been escalated. He also said the issue was with Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBBS), a platform that oversees fund transfer and settlement matters among banks in Nigeria. He said the issue would be resolved within 24 hours.

“It has been three days since I made the transfer and the issue has not been resolved. GTB has also refused to give me an update on the status of the transaction. I am actually expected to make a 10 percent interest payment on the loan. Now, the loan itself is still hanging somewhere with no solution in sight. My brother is also at the risk of losing his admission because of this matter.”

FIJ sent an email to GTB’s customer care desk for comments on Thursday, but it had not been responded to at press time.
