On December 24, 2022, Helen Nkiruka Obamwonyi, a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) customer, paid N65,000 for an Air Peace airline ticket via a Point of Sale (POS) machine at the airport using her GTB Mastercard.

Although the transaction was approved and was successful on the first try, Obamwonyi received a debit of N65,000 twice.

Obamwonyi reported that she logged in the dispense error after 24 hours and waited weeks for a reversal to no avail.

She said she later visited a GTB branch on Mobolaji Anthony way, Lagos, where she escalated the issue and was assured that her money would be reversed.

Obamwonyi told FIJ that her money was yet to be reversed and that despite calling customer support for hours and sending several emails, GTB had provided no update on the issue.

She said all she had received were automated emails from GTB, and that when she reached out to customer support, they told her that they were still working on it and waiting for the unit to conclude their investigation.

When FIJ contacted GTB customer support handle on Twitter, they advised that the account holder send them a message. FIJ insisted on speaking to a customer care agent but was not connected to any.
