Gloria Okolie, the 21-year-old lady arrested and allegedly enslaved by operatives of Intelligence Response Team (IRT), has sued Usman Baba, Inspector-General of Police.

In a suit filed at a Federal High Court in Abuja, Okolie demanded her immediate and unconditional release from the custody of the Police. She also asked the court to mandate the Police to pay her the sum of N100 billion as damages for infringing on her rights.

“A DECLARATION of this honourable court, that the act of the Respondent in detaining the 1st applicant from the 13th June 2021 till date, without an order of any court permitting same, is a violation of the 1st Applicant’s right to fair hearing and Personal Liberty as enshrined in articles 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Chapter A9 LFN, 2004,” the court document read in part.

Okolie’s family had alleged that she was used as a maid and sex slave by the officers while in custody. Christian Okolie, her uncle, also said the policemen collected N280,000 in bribes from the family and later demanded an additional N100,000 to free her.

On Sunday, the Police Force Headquarters said the lady was arrested and detained for “her complicity in the series of deliberate and well-coordinated attacks on security formations and other critical national infrastructure, including INEC offices, and killing of security operatives in the South-Eastern part of the country”.

In a statement signed by CSP Aremu Adeniran, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, the Police said Glory was arrested “following ongoing investigations and implementation of the special operation, Operation Restore Peace, to amongst other things, break the information, drugs and arms supply chain to the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network in the South-East region”.
