The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has just announced Peter Mbah, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the winner of the Enugu State governorship election held on Saturday.

According to INEC, Mbah got 160,895 votes to defeat Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP), who received 157,552 votes.

Uche Nnaji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got 14,575 votes, and the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance polled 17,983.

Mbah won the race by a whisker, as he defeated the LP with only 3,343 votes.

The collation process became rowdy at a point on Wednesday, as some party representatives expressed displeasure with the process.

FIJ earlier reported that INEC suspended the collation process in the state to review the available results and address allegations of over-voting and election-related controversies.

After reviewing the situation, the commission resumed the collation today, leading to the announcement of Mbah as the governor-elect.

INEC had said, “It will be recalled that our office in Obingwa Local Government Area was invaded by thugs yesterday Sunday 19th March 2023 and our officials held hostage in relation to the collation of results from the Local Government Area of Nsukka and Nkanu East.

“Consequently, the Commission hereby suspends the collation of results in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State and the two outstanding local government areas of Enugu State which are yet to be collated.”
