Chimaroke Nnamani, a former Governor of Enugu State and senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This came after the senator lost his seat to Kelvin Chukwu of the Labour Party (LP).

Nnamani was the senator for Enugu East Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011. He was reelected in 2019.

In the March 18 senatorial election, Kelvin polled 69,136 votes while Nnamani had 48,701 votes. Adaku Ogbu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) garnered a total of 8,548 votes.

Nnamani’s official resignation followed his expulsion from the party on February 10 over alleged anti-party activities. The party expelled him over his unhidden support for Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 presidential election.

In a statement on Monday announcing his resignation from the PDP, Nnamani explained that he decided to “quit the PDP on account of irreconcilable differences with the national leadership of the party”.

He also noted that he would continue to partner with Tinubu.

The senatorial election was earlier billed for February 25, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed it until March 18 after gunmen killed Oyibo Chukwu, who was the LP candidate for the district, two days before the election.

INEC suspended the exercise to allow the LP to nominate another candidate within 14 days in line with the Electoral Act 2022.

The LP replaced Oyibo with Kelvin, his younger brother.
