Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) who was indicted by a United States District Court over his alleged role in the fraud perpetrated by Ramon Abass, also known as Hushpuppi, may have a soft landing.

The embattled former Police Intelligence Response Unit (IRT) boss may not be reinstated as an officer in the Nigeria Police Force. However, he may not also be extradited to the United States of America (USA) to face trial.

THISDAY gathered that the while Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), may recommend his demotion, the Police Service Commission (PSC) will opt for his outright dismissal because of the weight of the alleged offence and its position against indiscipline in the Police.

Musiliu Smith, Chairman of the PSC, and Baba were said to have received instructions from the presidency on how to handle the matter.

“They may give him a soft landing but he is not likely to return to the Police. There may also be some diplomatic give-and-take to let him off the hook,” a police source was quoted to have said.

“The IG and the PSC chairman have also received directives on what to do in the matter. This matter is not such an internal one that they can handle alone.”

On Thursday, the Joseph Egbunike-led panel set up by the IGP to investigate the allegations against Kyari submitted its report.
