UBA has refunded N298,600 to Nelson Emakpo, a Delta State-based engineer whose money vanished in January.

This came two weeks after FIJ reported how N881,000 mysteriously left the engineer’s account in 48 hours.

“I received an SMS on Thursday afternoon. When I checked what it was about, I discovered it had come from the UBA. They had returned N298,600 out of the N881,000 that was stolen from my account in January,” a delighted Nelson said.

“I chased UBA for five months so they could help me recover the funds, but they did nothing about it. I came to you guys just two weeks ago and so far, you have been able to help me recover N298,600.

“This is a good start. I am very grateful. I can’t thank you enough. UBA has also said that they are still working on the issue to ensure that the remaining amount is recovered and returned to my account.

“Thank you, FIJ.”

Emakpo visited a UBA branch in Abraka, Delta State, in January to resolve the internet banking challenges he was facing but ended up receiving unauthorised debit alerts afterwards.

He subsequently got the bank to place a restriction on his account so that the fraudsters responsible for the theft would stop.

More money was however stolen from the account when an official of the bank forgot to return the restriction after Emakpo asked to withdraw some money.
