Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s president-elect, has taken a jibe at the CNN, Sky News and European cable networks for the kind of reporting they do on Africa.

This subtle attack took place at the glamorous commissioning of the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals in Lagos State today.

Tinubu, who addressed the audience of local and international guests, including seven African heads of state through Kashim Shettima, said Africa is a continent of possibilities and developmental issues, more than socio-economic crises in some parts of the continent.

Shettima, the vice-president-elect, said, “Africa is not all the crisis in Sudan, Africa is not all about poverty, deprivation and destitute. Africa is not all about insecurity. I hope the CNNs, the BBCs and the Sky News of this world will be around to give maximum coverage to this function.”

The United Kingdom-based BBC had reported on Sunday that the Buhari administration would be leaving the country worse than he met it in 2015 when he was elected.

The newspaper highlighted some of the systemic issues plaguing Nigerian citizens across geopolitical zones, such as banditry, terrorism, poverty, economic sabotage and hyper-inflation, which appear non-stop, even as Buhari prepares to exit office.

“When he steps down next week, President Muhammadu Buhari will be leaving Nigerians less secure, poorer and more in debt than when he came to office in 2015,” BBC reported.
