Clinton Eze, a businessman in Niger State, could not believe his eyes on April 17 when he woke up to notifications of 15 debit alerts from his account with the United Bank for Africa (UBA).

Eze told FIJ he was shocked and could not wrap his head around the disappearance of N2.5 million from his UBA account that morning, despite his daily limit being N200,000.

Recounting his misfortune, Eze said that immediately after daylight broke out, he went to a UBA branch to complain about the unfortunate deduction on his account.

He said after he spoke to the customer care representatives, the bank asked him to exercise patience for 10 working days, and he obliged.

At the expiration of the 10 days, Eze showed up at the same branch to reiterate the situation, but the bank manager wouldn’t have it.

“Are you expecting me to give you the money from my pocket?” Eze quoted the bank manager to have said. “He seemed harsh after I had relayed what happened to me.”

Unauthorized debit from UBA customer's account

According to Eze, the bank manager suggested that UBA might have sent a one-time password to him, implying that he might have been responsible for the transaction.

Eze, however, refuted this claim, clarifying that the last time he received such a message from the bank was on March 30, and he had initiated that transaction himself.

“He then showed me traces that someone logged into my UBA account on another phone. I asked them if the bank sent any other one-time password after March 30, but he answered in the negative,” Eze said.

“My Gmail app showed someone logged into my account with three phones. This means that UBA must have sent a one-time password three times to a number different from my phone number.

“If the bank did not send any one-time passwords after March 30, then someone from the bank is culpable. If UBA sent a one-time password, where did they send it to? I live alone and did not lose my phone at any time.”

Eze said the bank manager told him UBA would contact him but he received no communication from them.

The businessman claimed that the depletion of his funds had affected his business as he could no longer afford to import goods.

“UBA wants to send me back to my village empty-handed. People have advised me to use unconventional means to collect my money, but I want to follow due process,” he said.

When approached for comment on the matter, UBA responded via email, assuring FIJ that they were giving utmost attention to the issue and had forwarded it to the appropriate department.
