The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), an agency of the federal government, has seized a mansion belonging to AbdulFatai Ahmed, the immediate past Governor of Kwara State, over a N5billion debt.

On Wednesday, Robert Ohuoba, AMCON’s lawyer, led a team of fully armed policemen to Ahmed’s house in Ilorin to evict all occupants. He said Ahmed’s other residential apartments in Abuja would also be confiscated.

“The ex-governor Abdulfatai Ahmed is owing AMCON about five billlion naira and today, we have come to take over Palatial Mansion owned by the ex-governor,” Ohuoba said in a video obtained by FIJ.

“Until he pays the money he is owing AMCON and the federal government, by extension, he will not have access to this property any longer.”

Ohuoba added that the two-term governor had been given the chance to clear the debt in order to avoid being embarrassed but he refused.

“Nigeria must move forward. Debtors must pay their debts. It is an obligation,” he noted. “He was given the opportunity to negotiate the payment of this debt but he refused. Now, the law has to take its course and it’s no respecter of any man.

“We are here this morning with a team of 35 armed policemen to take over this mansion and secure same pending when His Excellency, Former Governor Ahmed and his companies pay their indebtedness. We are also moving to his other properties in Abuja until this debt is paid.”

FIJ learned that Justice A.M Liman of the Federal High Court, Lagos, gave AMCON the order to seize the mansion.

The agency’s move came less than 24 hours after Ahmed, alongside Prof. Atahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, and Pat Utomi, a foremost Nigerian Professor of Political Economy, unveiled ‘Rescue Nigeria Project’ ahead of 2023 elections.
