Benjamin Kalu, spokesman for the House of Representatives, has lamented a 13-hour flight delay experienced by members of the House Committee on Petroleum Upstream and Petroleum Technology Development Fund during a visit to Kano.

Kalu told The Nation that Azman Airline delayed the legislators’ return flight to Abuja without notice. According to him, the flight scheduled for 12:30 pm on Wednesday did not depart the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport until 1 am on Thursday.

“No one said anything at the airport. It was the usual statement from the pilot, saying, ‘Sorry for the long wait; it was due to operational reasons’. We believe that it was not weather because other airlines were fully operating,” he said.

“This is against the consumer rights law of this country. If you are stranded, you are supposed to have the attention of the operators of that airline, who should come to attend to you and even give you a cup of water.

“If national assembly members can be disregarded like this, then you can imagine what the citizens pass through.”

Flight delays by Nigerian airlines without adequate notice may have increased recently. On September 13, FIJ reported how Air Peace rescheduled a student’s flight six times between Sepember 6 and 7, before eventually cancelling it without explanation.

Passengers also protested on July 21 as Air Peace moved a flight from 8am to 8pm.
