Jesugbemi Emmanuel, a young musician in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, has narrated how four policemen extorted N150,000 from him on Thursday afternoon after falsely accusing him of internet fraud.

Emmanuel said he was on his way to the bank to deposit the money when he was accosted on a commercial motorcycle in the Apata area of the city.

“They asked me to come down and, before I could say anything, I was given multiple slaps here and there,” he began as he fought back tears in a video he uploaded on social media.

“They said I was a ‘Yahoo boy’ and asked to see my phone. I gave them my phone but they saw nothing, yet they insisted on their false allegation.

“I told them I was on my way to the bank to deposit the money my grandmother gave me for her house rent. He said, ‘Where is the money?’ I said the money was right inside my pocket. I brought out the money and he forcefully collected it from me. N150,000!”

Emmanuel said the officers asked him to format his phone before one of them, Samson Badru, kicked him out of their tricycle around Iwo Road.

Adewale Osifeso, the spokesman for the Oyo State Police Command, didn’t answer FIJ’s calls for comment. In response to a text message sent to him, he promised to send an update.

Since the proscription of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigerian Police in October 2020, FIJ has reported several cases of police brutality, extortion and harassment.
