The University of Maiduguri, Maiduguri, Borno State, has cancelled lectures and other academic activities for Monday, to receive Desert Warriors, the school’s football team, following their victory in the 2021 Higher Institutions Football League (HIFL) which was held in Lagos.

According to a letter dated October 10 and signed by Filibus Yamta, UNIMAID’s Director of Senate and Academic Affairs, staff and students of the institution will be conveyed to the Maiduguri International Airport on Monday to welcome the team.

“This is to inform all staff and students that lectures and other academic activities have been cancelled for Monday 11th October 2021. This is to enable all staff and students to receive the University of Maiduguri team, Desert Warriors, who were victorious in the Higher Institutions Football League,” the letter reads.

“The team will be returning from Lagos and arrangements are underway for staff and students to receive the team at the Maiduguri International Airport on their return. Staff, students and members of the University will be bused to the airport. Other activities marking the return of the team will be announced shortly.

In the HIML finals, which took place at Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, UNIMAID Desert Warriors defeated the AAUA Luminaries, the football team of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, to emerge the winner of the competition.
