Risikat Thompson (not real name), an HND II student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, has narrated how N10,655 mysteriously left her OPay account without her consent.

Thompson told FIJ that she noticed the unauthorised debit on her account on February 27.

“On February 27, I noticed that a total of N10,653 had been debited from my OPay account without my knowledge,” said Thompson.

“I was debited four times; I saw debit alerts for N2,535.95, N1,538.55, N5,162.46 and N1,598.29. All four transactions had the same narration – ‘OPay Card Payment’.

“I was devastated. This was a sum I was hoping to use to buy some handouts for some of the courses I am taking in school. The sad part is that I won’t be permitted to write tests in the courses if I don’t buy their handouts.”

Thomson told FIJ that she immediately reached out to OPay’s customer care service unit via phone on two different occasions but the officials she spoke with were unable to help her resolve her complaint.

“I was able to speak to two OPay customer care representatives after trying their lines on different occasions, but they were unable to help me trace the money,” Thompson said.

“I am a student who can not afford to lose such an amount to faceless fraudsters at the moment, not even in this harsh economic period.

“I have also not compromised my OPay account details in any way. I have always been very careful in the way I transact on the account.

“OPay should please give me my money back. I need the money for my handouts.”

When FIJ sent an email to OPay’s customer care unit for comments on the matter on Friday, Ogabi Naomi, one of the financial institution’s officials, requested that Thompson contact her unit directly.

“To what end? I have contacted them on several occasions, but they have refused to give me my money back. I don’t think reaching out to them again will change anything,” Thompson responded.
