The body of a second-year student of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), was found in his apartment on Wednesday.
FIJ learned that the student, identified as Aluko Samuel, was a member of the English and Literary Studies Department.
A source, who does not want to be named, told FIJ that the student hung himself in his apartment’s toilet. The source said the student had gone to charge his phone with his friends when he abruptly left the charging spot, only for his body to be found moments later.

FIJ’s source at the school said: “Nobody really knows why it happened. He was a 200 level student. He was found in the toilet. There’s a toilet opposite his room. He lived in a room-and-parlour apartment.
“It was a young boy that saw him first around 4 pm on Wednesday, and the boy raised the alarm.
“From what I know, the deceased student went to charge his phone at a play station and all of a sudden, he ran off. He had gone out with some of his friends. The boy just ran back home. He told them that he was coming. And the next thing, he was found hanging in his toilet.”

In a statement dated March 21, the FUOYE chapter of the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS) described the deceased student as a “precious, gentle, well-behaved and bright student”.
“We encourage the whole student of English and Literary Studies that whatever situation they are going through, suicide is not an option and no situation is ever worth life,” stated NASELS.

Meanwhile, this incident happened the day after a yet-to-be-identified student of the university died of an asthma attack.
According to local reports, the school management is claiming that this student’s death was a result of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) strike.
FIJ learned that the student’s death would probably have been avoided if the school clinic had not been locked due to the strike.
The “insensitivity” of the striking members of SSANU led to the closure of the school clinic, according to a report by The PUNCH.
