Students of Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State are calling for the management to take proper action towards salvaging the unfortunate situation of Folashade (not real name), a history student in her penultimate year, who was raped last night by two vigilantes.

Speaking to FIJ, some students of the institution said that after the incident was made known in the wee hours of today, the college management, in their usual fashion, tried to kill it and stifle students’ voices.

A student, who pleaded anonymity, told FIJ that the lady was raped at about 7 pm around the university’s law faculty after the vigilantes separated her from her boyfriend by asking him to leave for his hostel, even though it was not yet time for curfew.

“Immediately after he left, these men charged at her and then raped her,” the student told FIJ. “But we would not learn of what had happened until the news spread around the university and many were disgruntled.”

The student said Folashade sent a message to her class group chat at 2:39 am to inform them of her ordeal. According to the source, this message went around the school faster and caused ire among the students, who began to mount pressure on the management not to cover this issue as they had done previously with similar cases.

Another student said that the vigilantes asked her boyfriend to pay N5,000 when they saw them but he offered to pay N1,500 before they asked him to leave. Moments after he left, Folashade was seen running to her hostel in rough clothes, the source said.

According to this source, Folashade reported this matter to the porters at the entrance of the hostel but they dismissed her claims.

This morning, a screenshot from Folashade’s Snapchat page showed that nurses at the university’s medical centre called her unprintable names when they learned of the matter.

“They said I would be stigmatised in this school and that I would be a disgrace to everyone in school. They said I deliberately allowed them to rape me, that I wanted the sex,” the screenshot read in part.

FIJ attempted to call Folashade several times, but her number was switched off.

FIJ also called the university’s management, but their line did not connect. They have not responded to a text sent to their lines.

In a Facebook post this evening, the management said that they “received with shock a report of an alleged rape of one of our female students last night, Thursday, May 9, 2024, by two members of our vigilance group”.

“The management promptly handed over to the police the two people alleged to have committed the crime, while the university has set up its internal panel of inquiry to investigate the allegation,” the post concluded.
