Some members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), known as Shi’ites, have clashed with police officers in Kaduna State.

In one of the short videos of the incident posted on X on Friday and obtained by FIJ, police officers were seen chasing after some people and shooting in the process.

FIJ has learned that members of the IMN held a road demonstration in the Central Market area on Friday.

A trader at the Central Market told FIJ over the phone that the group’s members usually stage violent protests against the government’s treatment of Ibrahim Zakzaky, their leader.

“You know that their leader has been facing some criminal charges in court for some years now. So, they always stage road processions in his honour and demand a discontinuation of his trial by the government,” the trader said.

“Anytime they are protesting, they always move with dangerous items, which makes it easy for the police to wade in. It has always been bloody.”

“Today, they came out as usual and the police also came out as they usually do when they are protesting. I don’t know how it became confrontational, but I was hearing gunshots from my shop.

“I also have no idea if anyone died while the violent face-off lasted.”

The source further said that the situation had become calm and Muslims had been able to go out to observe Friday afternoon prayers.
