01.11.2021 news FIJ’s Damilola Ayeni Shortlisted for Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award

‘Damilola Ayeni, News and Feature Editor of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has been shortlisted for the 2021 edition of Thomson Foundation Young Journalists (FPA) Award, environment category.

In an announcement on Monday, Ayeni was listed among 14 other finalists for his 2021 investigation, “Ebedei, Delta State. Gas Flaring Village Where the People Eat Poison and Are Often Terminally Ill”, which tells the story of residents of a Niger Delta village living in close proximities to gas flares set by oil companies.

The organisers said Ayeni’s entry uncovered the threats and dangers to the survival of indigenous communities in the Niger Delta.

Other Nigerians on the list are Ifeoluwa Adediran of Premium Times, for her story on a Lagos Community battling indiscriminate dumping by cart pushers, and Kabir Adejumo of Humangle, for his story on illicit timber trade in Osun State.

According to the organisers, a winner will emerge among the shortlisted journalists during the award ceremony which will be held in the United Kingdom on November 29.
