The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike in protest of the federal government’s proposed removal of petrol subsidy in 2022.
Ahead of the strike action, the congress resolved to protest in all 36 states of the federation on January 27, 2022, and submit letters to all state governors.
Another protest will be held in Abuja on February 1, 2022.

NLC’s national executive council made these decisions at the Labour House, Abuja, on Friday, Punch reports. Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, earlier announced the removal of fuel subsidy to take effect in 2022, with the payment of N5,000 stipend to 40 million Nigerians taking its place.

This decision, according to the NLC, is ill-advised and will increase the suffering of the average Nigerian.
In a communiqué signed by Ayuba Wanna, NLC president, the body said, “The NEC, therefore, resolved to reject and resist the planned increase in the pump price of petrol by the federal government, as it described it as extremely insensitive to the acute hardship being experienced by Nigerian workers and people”.
