President Muhammadu Buhari has ruled out the possibility of approving state policing in Nigeria.

In a televised interview with Channels TV, and monitored by FIJ, Buhari said farmer-herder crises, one reason people call for state policing, can be resolved locally.

“State police is not an option,” Buhari said. “Find out the relationship between local government and the governors. Are the third tier of government getting what they are supposed to get constitutionally? Are they getting it? Let the people in local government tell you the truth, the fight between local governments and the governor.

“The Oyo governor and another southwest governor I cannot remember (not Ondo governor) came to meet me about farmer-herder crises in their state.

“I asked them to go back to the local leadership of the communities, where farmers and herders have been living together. These local leaders know how they have been coexisting for many years.”
