06.02.2022 Featured ‘For Failing to Pay Security Levy’, Bandits Dislodge Zamfara Residents, Take Over Community

Bandits have besieged Tofar Magami district, Dansadau Local Government Area of Zamfara State, to dislodge residents and take over their homes.

Although the number of casualties has not been ascertained, sources claimed many residents may have fallen victim. FIJ learned that many residents of the community fled, leaving the terrorists fully in charge.

The attack came barely a day after bandits raided three villages across three different local government areas in the state, killing about 30 people, including a chief imam.

There are reports that the attack was triggered by residents’ failure to pay the levy imposed on them by the criminals.

Payment of levies to bandits is common in the northern part of Nigeria. A source told FIJ that since August 2021, at least N42 million has been paid as security levies to bandits in Tungar Garko, Tabanni, Rugar Baba, Baraiko, Koren Magaji, Batai and Panga Yara villages in Zamfara State.
