The inability of the Registrar at the Magistrate Court, Yaba, Lagos, to read the handwriting of P. E. Nwaka, the magistrate, is delaying the release of Nicholas Mbah and Ugwumba Chimezie, the two #EndSARS protesters who have been in Kirikiri Prison since October.

On March 16, the Magistrate had granted bail to Mbah and Chikezie, who are standing trial for alleged armed robbery, arson and public disturbance.

Ruling on the bail application filed on behalf of the defendants by their counsel, the court admitted the two suspects to bail in the sum of N50,000 and two sureties in the like sum.

However despite meeting the bail conditions following the court order, the two #ENDSARS protesters are still languishing in detention.

FIJ gathered that prison officials are demanding documented evidence of the magistrate’s release order for the detainees. But the registrar, who is in possession of the document, said the magistrate’s handwriting is not legible enough for him to properly type out his instructions word-for-word.

FIJ understands the magistrate’s busy schedule meant he couldn’t be seen on Monday, while he is currently sitting at a court as of the time of going to press, further endangering the chances of freedom for the detainees today — exactly two weeks after they were granted bail.

FIJ had reported how Nbah and Chimiezie were whisked to Ojo Police Station and were accused of participating in the #EndSARS protests that led to the attacks on police stations in the area.
