The insistence of some police officers in mufti to forcefully arrest a young man has resulted in violence in the Maryland area of Lagos.

The man refused to leave his Pencil Light Toyota Camry, demanding to know his offence, but the police officers rather than open up attempted to drag him out, leading to slow movement of vehicles in the area.

Some area boys stormed the scene, and in an attempt to rescue the young man attacked the police officers, causing observers and passers-by to run to safety.

Speaking with FIJ, an eyewitness said the policemen had not told the man his offence and had not shown any valid proof that they were police officers.

FIJ, however, overheard one of the police officers telling a group of observers that there was no need telling the man his offence. “If he’s innocent, he wouldn’t have resisted arrest,” he said.

The officer who accused the man of stealing a phone revealed that they had tracked him to Maryland with his fiance’s phone.
