26.03.2022 news Ethiopian Police Arrest Three Nigerians for Cocaine Smuggling

Police in Ethiopia have arrested three Nigerians for allegedly smuggling cocaine into the country.

According to IOL, a South African media outfit, the Nigerians, who were not named, were arrested on two different smuggling operations at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on Tuesday.

The arrests were carried out following a search on passengers that had just flown in from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The alleged smugglers were flying from Sao Paulo Airport to various countries via Addis Ababa Bole International Airport with 1,895 pellets of cocaine.

Ethiopian law enforcement officers said the substance weighed 43kg.

Before their arrest, the Nigerians were also said to have tried initiating a brawl with Ethiopian officials, just to create chaos and escape. All three are said to be presently in police custody awaiting a trial date.

On December 1, 2021, two Nigerians were arrested at the same airport for allegedly trafficking 31.5kg of cocaine.

A total of 83 pellets of cocaine were recovered from their stomachs after necessary tests and screenings were carried out. They were said to have been planning to travel from Brazil to Nigeria via Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
