The PUNCH Newspapers has announced the appointment of Adeyeye Joseph as its new Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief.

Joseph, a former Editor of The PUNCH and Saturday PUNCH, succeeds Ademola Osinubi, who has been Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief for 27 years.

Osinubi, a former Editor of The PUNCH, Saturday PUNCH, and Sunday PUNCH before becoming Managing Director, retires on April 30 while Adeyeye assumes office as MD on May 1.

Speaking at the last board meeting of the newspaper, Osinubi said there couldn’t “be a better choice than Joseph as my successor at this period in the life of our newspaper company”.

According to an announcement by the paper, Joseph has played key roles in the ideation and implementation of successful print and digital projects in the newspaper group’s publications and digital arms in the last 10 years.

“I am grateful to God for this rare privilege. I am also grateful to the board for the confidence reposed in me,” Joseph said of his appointment.

“It is a time of great uncertainty for print and digital newspapers but as Sun Tzu wrote, ‘in the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity’. I intend to make my stewardship a period of relentless search for opportunities to grow our platforms, audience and revenue, and to create sustainable value for all our critical stakeholders.

“With the support of my colleagues within and outside our editorial units, I intend to sustain the culture of corporate excellence and the tradition of timely, courageous, pro-people journalism that has stood PUNCH in good stead in the last two decades.”

Joseph is a multiple winner of the Nigerian Media Merit Awards (NMMA) and the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), as well as the DAME Informed Commentary Prize.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University and a master’s degree in Digital Journalism (distinction) from the Middlesex University, United Kingdom.

He is an alumnus of the general management programme of Cranfield University, UK, and a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Institute of Directors of Nigeria.

He began his journalism career at THISDAY, where he worked between 2000 and 2005. He joined the PUNCH as a Chief Correspondent (Special Features) in 2005 and was the Education and Science Editor for the paper from 2006 to 2007. He was Editor, Saturday PUNCH, 2007-2010; Editor, The PUNCH, between 2010 and 2013; and Controller of Publications between 2013 and 2016.

He completed his secondary education at Akinmoorin Grammar School, Oyo in 1989; attended Ladoke Akintola University of Technology between 1991 and 1993, and then Obafemi Awolowo University, where he bagged a degree in accounting in 1999. He also holds a master’s degree in digital journalism (distinction) from the Middlesex University, United Kingdom.

Joseph currently serves as the Executive Director for Digital Operations and Publication at The PUNCH.
