Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Nigeria Police Force have beaten up a young man in Ekiti over the colour of his hair.

In a tweet on Monday, the victim’s sister said the police officers searched her room for her brother before pouncing on him.

“Every time I tweet about police harassment, some people think I’m just making noise! RRS just left my compound, searched my room, beat my brother, because of the color of his hair, saying, ‘Shebi na una dey chase SARS,” she wrote.

Many of those who commented under the tweet said harassment of young people by RRS officials in Ekiti was rather becoming too frequent.

“Those RRS are something else in Ekiti,” a comment reads. “Last week I heard they came to Moferere to harass some boys.”

In a conversation with FIJ, John Ayokunle, a youth leader in Ekiti, said he had learnt of multiple cases of harassment by RRS officials.

“A lot of people are complaining about this RRS within a short period of time,” said Ayokunle. “Although I’m not presently in Ekiti, I belong in many social media groups where people speak with facts and figures about them.”
